Artist Talk: Ellen Fritz
ARTSLab on Instagram: "ARTIST TALK! December 3 at ARTSLab Ellen Fritz is a multimedia artist building ecosystem worlds in game engines and using physical mediums like paint and clay as static diagrams of the ever-changing virtual worlds. Her works experiment with virtual environments both as archival mediums, preserving information of the past, and as speculative apparatuses to imagine futures beyond anthropocentric logic. In this presentation, Ellen will walk through some of her works that engage with site-specific histories of human relationships to land and animals- from paleolithic carvings of now-extinct animals to mythologies that attempt to explain ancient fossil discoveries. Her approach functions on two archaeological registers: Traditional archaeology, which excavates materials and burials left behind by humans of the past, and media archaeology, where historic or obsolete technologies are examined in a modern medium– the game engine. Both approaches share the premise that all archaeology elaborates on our current situation, and that the answers to the most urgent questions pertaining to our future often lie in the cyclical patterns of the past."
