Storm De Hirsch (1912-2000) was an American poet and filmmaker. She was a key figure in the New York avant-garde film scene of the 1960s and has been recognized as a pioneer of underground cinema. Shutter Interface by Paul Sharits (1975, 24 min) is a 16mm sequence of solid-color frames punctuated at intervals by black are projected to create a long, overlapping band. The installation casts a hypnotic and trancelike effect with its pulsating fields of color. The film is significant for its exploration of the relationship between color, material, and human perception.
